Honduras started their coup in June 28 and hasn't been fully resolved as of now. The president was kicked out of the country as the military put a new president, Micheletti, in place. The former president, Zelaya, was returned to Honduras after the other countries did not want bad relations. The United States were in the front to try to make peace between both parties and made a deal. The deal stated that Zelaya would have his place in the government and the de facto government would not be put in place until elections were held in November. Mujica's Win
The ex-guerrilla fighter, Jose Mujica, had a great majority of votes won. He is a socialist senator and won 47.5% of the votes in the report of the Electoral Court. He did not win enough votes to avoid the elections in November but he is the strongest candidate in the election. The others had 28.5 and 16.7 percents which is not enough to win the socialist party. Colombia's conflicts
Colombia is in a crossfire between Venezuela and Ecuador for trying to suppress the FARC, or Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia. Colombia tried to apologize but it did not work. The borders were tightened and soldiers sent in last year. Relations just got worse as time passed by. Chavez even froze relations and called back their ambassador back to their country. Colombia has problems internally and externally as the government forces try to fight the rebels while trying to get their relations better with the other countries but with to no avail. The justification that Colombia came up was that Venezuela and Ecuador were in fact allied with the rebel forces. Some effort has been shown in trying to improve relations between Colombia and Ecuador but no real progress shown. As the United States is giving military aid for Colombia in their bases, this crisis seems to be scaling into something bigger than just a small rebellion.
Brazil's Vow
Brazil was outraged as drugs became out of control. Drug traffickers killed a total of 21 people in a bloody fight in Rio de Janeiro. President Luiz Inacio declared that they would do everything to stop this problem and prevent it in the future. This is highlighted and a focus in the world since Brazil had just been picked a few weeks ago to have the 2016 Olympics. The fight ended with a police chopper crash landing with two officers dying instantly and another dying after being badly burned. This may take quite a bit of time to clean up the problems of gangs, organized crime and drug trafficking. The government promised $59 million to combat crime and drugs. The International Olympic Committee did not seem concerned about this kind of activity in Rio de Janeiro.
Chile's Female President
Michelle Bachelet became the first female president in Chile after the conservative parties resided. Becoming a female president was not easy for Bachelet since most female presidents gained power through other means such as husbands. She lost support as students demonstrated against her and her projects failed. But with just a few months left until she leaves office, she is gaining great popularity rising up to 70% in recent polls. This is due to her handling in the issues of economics and the global financial crisis. She saved billions in copper sales and then used much of it for women and children and their protection.
